The Inaugural Connection Series EduCAT 2023 Engagement Meeting

Brief overview-

On Monday, August 18, 2003, a passionate group of Clevelanders attended the initial EduCAT Community Action meeting sponored by Dave Nash a Partner at Thompson Hine LLP. The following individuals were present to brainstorm ideas about global themes and the overarching mission of this developing initiative.

Action-oriented outcomes

The group discussed and agreed on the following first steps:

1. The overarching goal as cogently articulated by Richard Andrews and supported by those in attendance was the view that this CAT's underlying philosophy should be the the notion of " building and marketing this region as a learning community". A region that will value education and long-long learning across the life-span where we are "educating the region about education" utilizing a broad-based agenda.

2. Another goal that was strongly voiced was the notion of using this CAT as a vocal advocate to support and align itself with the CMSD and other groups that lobby on behalf of educational issues. It was suggested that the group could issue reports, support advocacy efforts in Columbus and produce fact sheets and action alerts.

Specific and Tangible Suggestions

1. Work closely with the Cleveland Muncipal School District.
2. Develop project with schools where children create blogs and on-line journals: in and outsideof classroom.
3. Celebrate Teachers Day--This was a success and received attention in the Plain Dealer.
4. Benchmarking educational projects and initiatives of other cities: Boston, Seattle NYC.
5. IT Technology and Wired Educational Projects

What's next on the EduCAT agenda??????

1. Participation in the Connection Series CS 5 Event on Wednesday, November 12, 2003 at the Club at Key Center--please register at www.ConnectionSeries.com.

2. A meeting with the Deputy Chief of Post-Secondary Education with the CMSD in November.

3. Collaborative involvement with Cleveland Digital Vision. www.Clevelanddigitalvision.org.

4. Next EduCAT meeting in November.

Quick Thoughts on the EduCAT Engagement Meeting

First, up, I would like to extend a warm thank you for those in attendance last night, and those who could not attend but sent offers of support and suggestions. The first objective was accomplished with the launch--the next "Kitty Kat" steps involves discussing a broad and sustainable mission/vision. I will post the notes from the meeting soon.
